My Dream

Yay!! We've exceeded our goal all the way up to $ 20,801.00 (and still counting) Donations are still coming in, and there is still time to give the camp more. The trek is over and the camping fun has now begun. Everyone whose offered help has been so very amazing. Gene has big ideas for the next fundraising event, but he's keeping them to himself for the time being, hopefully he'll let the rest of us in on the secret soon.

My name is Gene Fletcher. I have cerebral palsy and scoliosis and I am confined to a wheelchair. I moved to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula from Sacramento, CA in 2002. I have been going to Bay Cliff Health Camp now for six years.

Trek to Bay Cliff is a program where I and other campers can raise money for Bay Cliff and bring awareness to the world that kids like me can do the same as other kids without disabilities, it’s just a matter of doing it different. We just want an opportunity to do these things.

Bay Cliff Health Camp gives us that opportunity. There, through a daily combination of daily physical, occupational, speech and music therapies as well as instruction for the hearing and visually impaired, the staff and volunteers help all of us accomplish our goals toward greater independence. We spend seven weeks each summer having fun and learning new skills. Bay Cliff is our summer Home.

My goal this year is to ride my wheelchair 100 miles from Rapid River, on the northern tip of Lake Michigan to Big Bay, on the south side of Lake Superior. By pushing, pulling or riding under my own power, this four day trip will be an adventure that will last me a lifetime and allow me to give back to a program that means so much to so many. Other campers will be raising money in their own way.

Your contribution to Trek to Bay Cliff will help us raise needed funds for Bay Cliff and who knows, maybe some day, I too, or one of my friends can leave there walking.

I invite you on this journey with me as I prepare and finally complete my goal.
